SOTD: Lentil (Live) – SiA

Song: Lentil (Live)
Artist: SiA
Album: Lady Croissant
Genre: Pop/Alternative
In short: Pint-sized Australian songbird Sia Furler has been making music for a long while, but her breakthrough came after her collaborative work with UK trip-hop duo Zero 7. Preceding the release of her fourth album, Some People Have Real Problems, Furler released a live album containing some of her old hits and new songs that were later included on the follow-up release. One of those songs is the sublime “Lentil”, written by Furler herself and long-time friend Samuel Dixon, the song mirrors Furler’s charming personality and is a notch above most singer-songwriters’ material.

SOTD: Bad Habit – Joss Stone

Song: Bad Habit
Artist: Joss Stone
Album: Introducing… Joss Stone
Genre: Soul
In short: There is no artist in recent history that has tried to reboot his/her career as much as Joss Stone is trying to do. After the phenomenal success of her sophomore album Mind, Body, and Soul, Stone released three album titled Introducing… Joss Stone, Colour Me Free, and LP1, respectively. On each record, Stone has tried to revamp her career and gain more credibility, but sadly none of the releases were as good as her sophomore record. That being said, on Introducing… Joss Stone, “Bad Habit” stands out like a flame inside a railway tunnel.

SOTD: This Too Shall Pass – Maria Mena

Song: This Too Shall Pass
Artist: Maria Mena
Album: This Too Shall Pass – Single
Genre: Pop
In short: “This Too Shall Pass” is the lead single off Maria Mena’s highly-anticipated fifth studio album, Viktoria. Written by Mena, the number is her own letter of apology to the people she has hurt unintentionally or intentionally. “The winds of your ego / The waves of My tears / Made The most perfect almighty storm that we’ve seen this year / But experience gathered / We’ve learned from our past / So don’t worry darling / This too shall pass,” sings Mena on the confessional number.

SOTD: In My Bed – Amy Winehouse

Song
: In My Bed
Artist: Amy Winehouse
Album: Frank
Genre: Jazz/Soul
In short: Amy Winehouse’s music is unapologetically crusty, and completely sensational. Even though Amy is gone, her music is immortal.

SOTD: I Can’t Stay – Jesse Boykins III

Song: I Can’t Stay
Artist: Jesse Boykins III
Album: Way Of A Wayfarer
Genre: Hip-Hop/Neo-Soul
Artist: When it comes to voices, Jesse Boykins has a distinct one that cannot be mistaken for anyone else’s. The Beauty Created was an enthralling debut rich with all-natural extracts, making it hard to follow up, but the Wayfarer EP promises of a grander sound. “I Can’t Stay” has a sound more progressive than that found on his debut, leaving listeners wanting more while whetting their appetites for the upcoming full-set release.

SOTD: You Gave Me Nothing – Mark Ronson & The Business Intl.

Song: You Gave Me Nothing (Feat. Rose Elinor Dougall & Andrew Wyatt)
Artist: Mark Ronson & The Business Intl.
Album: Record Collection
Genre: Alternative/Hip-Hop
In short: Mark Ronson’s latest record saw him go back to his roots, producing an album more similar to his debut, Here Comes the Fuzz, than the glossy Versions. Featuring Rose Dougall and Andrew Wyatt, “You Gave Me Nothing” is a storming number that leaves little to be desired. The call-and-answer structure of the song finds both parties at odds, trying to understand each other.

SOTD: I Hate That You Love Me – Diddy – Dirty Money

Song: I Hate That You Love Me
Artist: Diddy – Dirty Money
Album: Last Train To Paris
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
In short: On his latest record, Diddy outdid himself; his latest protege, all-girl group Dirty Money, stole the spotlight and shone brightly on their nation-debut alongside their mentor. Last Train To Paris is an underrated album, overshadowed by Diddy’s foolery outside of the music.

SOTD: Halcyon Days – Siobhán Donaghy

Song: Halcyon Days
Artist: Siobhán Donaghy
Album: Ghosts
Genre: Alternative/Pop
In short: The first member to disband from the Sugagabes, Siobhán Donaghy, has released two solo albums since parting ways with the other members. Her sophomore album saw her working with producer James Sanger, whose production credits include U2, Keane, and Dido. The ethereal “Halcyon Days” is a moody number dotted with rays of hope; Donaghy sings so delicately, as if the melody could be broken by a puff of air. Sound-wise, “Halcyon Days” is the kind of song you’d imagine mermaids singing deep down in the ocean.
