SOTD: No Diggity – Chet Faker

Image

Song: No Diggity
Artist: Chet Faker
Album: Thinking In Textures
Genre: Alternative
In short: Chet Faker’s cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” strips it of its Hip-Hop roots and dresses it up in a dreamy production. A pretty bold move for a new artist. Check it out below.

SOTD: Lentil (Live) – SiA

Song: Lentil (Live)
Artist: SiA
Album: Lady Croissant
Genre: Pop/Alternative
In short: Pint-sized Australian songbird Sia Furler has been making music for a long while, but her breakthrough came after her collaborative work with UK trip-hop duo Zero 7. Preceding the release of her fourth album, Some People Have Real Problems, Furler released a live album containing some of her old hits and new songs that were later included on the follow-up release. One of those songs is the sublime “Lentil”, written by Furler herself and long-time friend Samuel Dixon, the song mirrors Furler’s charming personality and is a notch above most singer-songwriters’ material.

SOTD: I Hate That You Love Me – Diddy – Dirty Money

Song: I Hate That You Love Me
Artist: Diddy – Dirty Money
Album: Last Train To Paris
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
In short: On his latest record, Diddy outdid himself; his latest protege, all-girl group Dirty Money, stole the spotlight and shone brightly on their nation-debut alongside their mentor. Last Train To Paris is an underrated album, overshadowed by Diddy’s foolery outside of the music.

SOTD: Halcyon Days – Siobhán Donaghy

Song: Halcyon Days
Artist: Siobhán Donaghy
Album: Ghosts
Genre: Alternative/Pop
In short: The first member to disband from the Sugagabes, Siobhán Donaghy, has released two solo albums since parting ways with the other members. Her sophomore album saw her working with producer James Sanger, whose production credits include U2, Keane, and Dido. The ethereal “Halcyon Days” is a moody number dotted with rays of hope; Donaghy sings so delicately, as if the melody could be broken by a puff of air. Sound-wise, “Halcyon Days” is the kind of song you’d imagine mermaids singing deep down in the ocean.

Lyrics: Earreading [18]

What part of your memory is selective and tends to forget?”

SOTD: Paper Thin – MC Lyte

Song: Paper Thin
Artist: MC Lyte
Album: Lyte As A Rock
Genre: Rap
In short: Known for being one of the very first female rappers on the scene, MC Lyte has successfully made her mark and paved the way for the generation that followed. Lyte As A Rock is a great introduction to Lyte’s wonderful world of rap classics, including the album’s title track, “10% Dis”, “Paper Thin”, and many others.

Spotlight: ;john – iamamiwhoami

The enigma that’s been taunting millions of its followers sporadically is still no where near being riddled out. The latest release (2 months ago) “; john” hints at new beginnings, while still holding onto previous clues and formats. Each video features a song that is simultaneously released on iTunes, and their latest could be one of their greatest. My personal favorite remains “b”, but “; john” plays on different fields, making followers amp their excitement and anticipation for what’s to come.

nuLike: Yesterday – Toni Braxton

TBMs. Braxton is finally (and officially) back! After many leaked songs, a proper first single saw the light yesterday (no pun intended). The track sounds like a Ryan Tedder track (it could’ve easily been a Leona Lewis’ single). Her voice is stronger than the hard-hitting drums. This is definitely one of the best comeback singles this year (it and Whitney’s Million Dollar Bill).
PS: This post is dedicated to Abdullah at p0ach.
