Song: No Diggity
Artist: Chet Faker
Album: Thinking In Textures

In short: Chet Faker’s cover of Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” strips it of its Hip-Hop roots and dresses it up in a dreamy production. A pretty bold move for a new artist. Check it out below.

Review: Hot Mess – Cobra Starship

Cobra StarshipArtist: Cobra Starship
Album: Hot Mess
Release date: August 11
Label: Fueled by Ramen/Decaydance

You rarely find a band that doesn’t take itself seriously, and have fun while doing so, Cobra Starship is the prime example of that.  Gabe Saporta (The band’s frontman and creator) gave up on the emo-punk sound for a synth-infused one long ago, but never more evident than on Hot Mess. The album is full of radio-ready songs that are sure to heat the airplays including the sizzling lead single “Good Girls Go Bad” featuring Gossip Girl’s malicious Lieghton Meester on vocals, producer Kevin Rudolf behind the board, and a co-write from songwriter/American Idol judge Kara DioGaurdi. The disco-inspired “Living In The Sky With Diamonds” is another highlight while the somber “Fold Your Hands Child” recalls some older material. The title track is a catchy piece of fluffy pop music. Hot Mess has many elements of 80’s pop/rock such as the Hall & Oates’ nod on “Living In The Sky With Diamonds” and The Damned’s “Smash It Up” sampled chorus on the infectious “Pete Wentz Is The Only Reason We’re Famous”. The album is not for everybody, and most definitely not for people who want their music by the rules; it is an album full of mindless pop tunes, catchy hooks, restless dance beats, arena rock guitars and silly (but sometimes emotive) lyrics. It delivers exactly what the title promises making it perfect for hot summer nights.

Highlights: “Good Girls Go Bad”, “Hot Mess”, “Living In The Skiy With Diamonds”, “Fold Your Hands Child”, “Wet Hot American Summer

List: UK Girlbands Guide, vol.1

GBANDWhenever someone mentions the word girlband, the first thing that must come to your mind is.. well, Spice Girls. The UK have always been the place-to-be if you’re an aspiring girlband, after all, the UK spawned two of the most successful girlbands of our time, Sugababes and Girls Aloud. The success of those two caused the origination of many girlbands, some stayed, some dissolved. I consider UK’s girlbands a dominant players in Pop music, and as a pop lover, I can’t help but love them, maybe some more so than others. I’ve compiled some of my favorite songs of each of the two prominent girlbands, one song from each album. Don’t be fooled by the term “girlband”, they deliver the goods, trust.

Song Of The Day

krisSong: Heartless (Kanye West Cover)
Artist: Kris Allen
Album: American Idol 8: Kris Allen
In short: When I heard him say he’ll sing Heartless, I was wtf’d a bit, but I have to say he did a GREAT job, it’s even better than the original and any cover version, I didn’t know those were the lyrics of the song when Kanye sang it, so kudos Kris!

Hey, sorry for the slow updates, but it’s exams time, so please bare with me, for the time being, get this:

yaminI’ve been a fan of Yamin since the release of his first single, I didn’t know he was on idol when I first heard the song, because I haven’t bothered to watch the season he was in. Anyways, here are two songs from his new album that were “instant” to me upon first listen. The first “Apart From Me”  is my favorite, it’s catchy and everything I wanted from him. I can see myself playing this song to death and getting bored of it two months in. The second “Know Better” is another standout track, his whole album is great, but those two stood out the most, enjoy them.

Apart From Me
Know Better

cmWho doesn’t love that cute girl from the songs “Like A Dream” and “Be Ok”? Well, she done grow up, and the new look matches the sound! The sound is more urban, more upbeat, but I have to admit that I liked her previous album more because of its “authenticity” I guess. Anyways, here are two songs as well, the first “Blame It On Me”, the album’s big ballad. It’s one of the finest ballads this year. Her voice is not the best, granted, but she works what she got!

Another One

dramaAn old friend of mine introduced me to the band with the songs Dirty Laundry and Bittersweet Faith, and then another friend of mine told me to download the theme song of “Lipstick Jungle” and when I looked it up, it was non other than Bitter:Sweet. The song is taken from their latest album “Drama”. The song is lovely, and very breezy.

Remixtation: LoveGame – Lady GaGa

gaga1I love remixes that change the listening “experience” of a song, “Robtos to Mars” remix does that exactly. It tones the song down, and make it very lounge-y, except for the main track which isn’t slowed down. Take a listen and decide for yourself.

puppiniSong: Crazy In Love
Artist: The Puppini Sisters
Album: Rise And Fall Of Ruby Woo
In short: A cover of Beyonce’s mega-hit of the same title. It is what “Crazy In Love” would’ve been had it been recorded in the 60’s. Listen to it, it’s CRAZY, the violin breakdown from 1:46 till the end is basically sex for the ears.
